Among the EsVi spaces are school gardens. Here, students learn by doing: planting seeds, caring for the soil, and eventually harvesting the vegetables they’ve grown themselves. Every child, teacher, and school receives supplies, timed for the start of the school year, to help lessen the financial burden on families and promote education in the community. In addition to individual school supply packets, we also deliver toys, balls, books, art supplies and more over the course of a week with volunteer help. (Are you interested in volunteering? Keep reading and click the link below!) On the day of delivery, students, teachers, parents, and volunteers gather in a shared space. Sometimes that space is inside a classroom or the community building, or it might be in a gazebo overlooking the river in a small community with only a primary school. We may even be outside in large communities where there are many students in all grade levels, preschool and kindergarten, primary school and high school. Using the enrollment lists provided by teachers, we call each student to the front, where they receive a packet containing essentials for the start of the school year. Because school supplies are developmentally appropriate, students in secondary grades receive different supplies than first-grade primary students, for instance. Teachers also receive customized packets to support their work in the classroom. With a dedicated team of 24 people, we were able to visit all 49 partner communities. Our seven field teams included school specialists and an environmentalist for each community. While the school specialists observed classrooms and interviewed teachers and principals, the environmental specialist met with families and community leaders to hear their perspectives on the year’s successes and challenges. One recurring theme we heard this year was that the higher-than-average water levels in May, June, July, and August led to a loss of plantain and corn crops, as well as flooding of some of the recently planted fruit trees. Not only was there a lack of school supplies for students, and not a single book, but the teachers seemed abandoned as well. They did not receive any support apart from a salary and a schoolhouse. Government budgets did not include logistics for transport by boat; officials and education supervisors could not get to the communities to actually see teachers and students in their schools. How could the people in charge know anything about the quality of education if they couldn’t even get there? Without their presence in the community, these issues could take months to even identify. • CONAPAC can help choose teachers for the GREL to contract in the communities. UGEL representatives also attend to add teacher development and present government information about new school plans and regulations without the teachers having to miss days to go to Iquitos. • UGEL and GREL specialists can accompany CONAPAC during community visits throughout the school year, increasing their support for communities and teachers in the schools without affecting their transport budget. • CONAPAC supplies logistics so UGEL and GREL specialists can participate in the end-of-year community and school evaluations.
