Getting Their Hands Dirty!

Within the environmental education focus of Peru’s national curriculum, students explore Espacios de Vida (EsVi), or “living spaces.” Schools in the rural Amazon of Loreto—where CONAPAC works closely with communities—are no exception.

Among the EsVi spaces are school gardens. Here, students learn by doing: planting seeds, caring for the soil, and eventually harvesting the vegetables they’ve grown themselves. Nothing beats enjoying the fruits (and veggies!) of their own labor.

EsVi encourages students to care for the soil, air and water, and to appreciate the rich diversity of plants and animals around them. It also promotes responsible solid-waste management and healthier food choices. Together, these experiences help students understand the value of their natural resources and how sustainable practices support their future.

If you are a regular reader of our newsletters and blog posts, you will recognize this as a recurring theme in the teacher workshops we offer. When you donate to our Adopt-A-School program, you’re contributing far more than school supplies—you’re also helping us equip educators, through our workshops, with the tools and training they need to bring environmental learning to life.

Teachers from our partner communities stay connected—with each other and with us—through a shared WhatsApp group, where they regularly post photos and videos of their students’ projects. It’s here that they proudly show off their thriving EsVis and celebrate each step of their students’ growth. The group has become a space where ideas spread and where educators, students, and communities—often separated by long distances and mighty rivers—can celebrate one another’s successes.

A big thank you to all of you who donated on GivingTuesday!

All through the rest of December, we hope you will donate to our Adopt-A-School program to help us provide school supplies to every child in our partner communities. Our end-of-year goal is $65,000, and we believe we can reach it with your help! (All donations are received by our partners, the Detroit Zoo; 100% of your donation is transferred directly to CONAPAC.) Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and succeed. Help us give them the tools they need.

Here is how you can get ready to give:
-Mark your calendar.
-Give all through December. Go to https://www.conapac.org/be-involved and give. There you can see ways to support us in our mission to promote conservation of the rainforest through education.
-Spread the word. Encourage your friends and family to join you in creating real impact on December 2 by sharing what our mission means to you and why you support our organization

Want to donate?

We have several long-time donors and partner organizations who work tirelessly for CONAPAC; with you, we can do so much for our communities.

Our work is only possible with the many other donations, big and small, that we receive throughout the year.
